Why do you favour Leica M R Digital or P&S

I traded away my M6TTL and all my M lenses for an R9 along with a 180 F2 APO, 80 1.4 APO, 50 Summicron Rom. I did this because I have started to shoot mainly people fashion shots as opposed to the street shots I'd been taking before. I find leica lenses are fantastic. However as a fashion photographer I could not justify using the M system over all. It's a matter of application rather than out right quality. I think it's much more important to develope solid technique and style. ALL the big camera makers make a fine product, but if you want the best in my opinion you have to go with leica glass. The R vs M debate will go on for ever, sort of a shame because that time could be spent taking pictures and expanding horizons and photographic knowledge.

Sorry to hear you had to trade away your M6. But the R9 is such a wonderful camera. (I would hate to have to choose one over the other.) Intuitive like the M, and soooo easy to use. Perhaps the best SLR made by Leitz/Leica, IMHO. That is if you don’t mind rather large SLR cameras, which I personally don’t. Please let us know how you find the R9.

Because a Japanese friend told me, buying Leicas are like putting $ in bank. I buy M because interest rate is so low these days.
 
Sorry, had mis-understood the thread's original meaning and had posted something irrelevant.

I just intended to make a joke, my post's original idea is, since I won't get much interest from putting $ into bank, so I would rather buy an M and enjoy the system. Of course I hope I won't need to sell it in the future to withdraw the cash, but in case I really need to, I reckon I won't lose much, looking at the bright side, I even hope I can make some $. :D

Thats one of the reason why I am into M.
 
Let me tell you a story. I once had a BMW R45 ( boxer engine ) motorcycle. I traded that for a brand new Honda 750 ( naked version). Big mistake !!. The speed of the Honda was there, the acceleration was there, the engine balance tremendous but lacking in overall quality of the materials ( compared to the BMW ) and a lack of feel for what a true motorcycle should be. Maybe I was biased but with Leica bodies and Leica glass is the same. That is why I maintain my Leica LTM collection, M3 , M6TTL and a Leica R4 with respective lenses ( all sh). I am debating about a Leica for a street camera, something to carry everywhere and do art type shots. I love takling pictures of street dogs, people, architecture. Which Leica would be right for me? I heard there is a new Leica Digilux 2 coming out but that it will be about $1900! That is kind of high for a 5 megapixel camera. What do you Leica owners think about digital VS film in Leica? I am looking at something light but versatile. It doesn't have to be the latest or greatest, but the optics should be top notch. I would probably use this camera as wide angle or up to 50mm. Thanks for the help.
 
Elaine, first a few questions:

--What camera(s) do you use now?

--If you go with a film camera will you do the darkroom work yourself or send film to a lab? Will you scan or print at home or with a lab?

I find using a Leica M camera to be a unique experience. I've used a handful of p/s digicams and found them frustrating as a street camera when it comes to moments. The shutter lag and depth of field ultimately drove me crazy. Once you get into a DSLR those problems disappear. I can't imagine paying nearly $2,0000 USD for what it essentially a point and shoot camera. I would buy a digital Canon Rebel first. But once you get into DSLRs you are talking another experience compared to a Leica M.

I would recommend a used Leica M6 and either a 35 or 50mm lens to start with, whichever focal length you feel more comfortable with. If you don't like them you can probably sell them for close to what you paid and not lose a lot of money in the process, and possible break even.
 
I second M6 as well.

Reading your messenge, I think you already got an answer by yourself.

No doubt 2 grand for an unknown Digilux 2 seems a little out of question to myself too. No matter how good the glass can be, the 2/3" CCD sensor is still going to be a limiting factor for DOF.

As an M user, as well as numerous digicam and AF-SLR user, I just found the M is next to nothing if talking about responsiveness, which allow me to capture a couple of naughty faces of my wife which I can never been fast enough to catch with my other cameras.

Though most of the "art" type shots taken can only be understood by myself. Not good enough! LoL.
