ok, you got me. I am making the digital plunge after checking out the 20D at my local camera store. The speed and clarity just blow me away, not the mentioned the feel and built quality. I think I will be getting it by the end of this month, on order. However, I intent to use my old flash unit, 300EZ, with the 20D and I just wonder is there a compatibility problem, since it only has ttl. I am not a flash photography guy but need it just on some occasions. Appreciate all comments. Thank you.

I'm butting in here as probably the biggest culprit of "upgraditis" - let's see if I get this right with 13 hours of jet lag (will be posting some EOS 1Ds II pics from China soon), starting about 33 years ago ... => means replaced with, =+ means added:

Olympus 35rc => Olympus OM-1 => Contax RTS =+ Mamiya RB-67 => (RTS stolen) 139 + 137 + RB-67 => Bronica GS-1 =+ RTS II => Fuji GX-680 =+ Nikon F4 => Linhof Tecknikardan 23 + RTS III => ND =+ EOS 1Ds II ... to be continued

.

Somewhere along there I had a Pentax 6x4.5 SLR for a few months which sucked and was also thankfully stolen (living in Queens can be useful sometimes). With the Fuji GX-680 I also had a couple of their medium format rangefinders, a 6x4.5 and a 6x9. No, I'm not a professional - OK, maybe a professional doddler.

Behind that I had (have) a full darkroom with a Jobo ATL-3 processor and an Omega 4x5 with a Frankenstein Phillips additive colorhead (I hacked the controls so I could get better color control). If anybody wants the ATL-3 or enlarger (Schneider & Rodenstock lenses) they're free for the pick-up ...

Here's a rather basic question. How much difference will it make in the speed with which my Canon digital camera records images if I buy one of the super fast CF cards? e.g. Lexar has a 1GB 80x Professional CF card w/ WriteAcceleration. Does this really help?

Hi Tim

Well done for taking the plunge - digital WILL change your outlook (photographically speaking) especially if you start thinking of what you can do afterwards in Photoshop (double shooting for hi and lo lights and merging the two images etc etc.). I work alot for Corbis on corporate assignments - often awkward conference lighting situations - by shooting intelligently and applying some fairly simple post-prod techniques you get results which film could never give (well...it would be alot more difficult and time consuming)

Concerning flash - I use just as 'fill-in" - I did have problems with my 550EX and 1Ds (MK One) - I recently bought 1D MK II (faster, therefore better for my requirements) and got the new 580EX flash - simply superb - finally up to Nikon standards.

You take no risk in trying out your 300EZ you already have it- TTL or ETTL - should work fine - experiment. If you don't like it... maybe a change - but do you have other priorities (L'' lenses?)

Once again all depends on YOUR usage - Mark A Williams sums it up in his post above - spot on

Hello Tim, Mary-Lou, et al,

Tim,

I expect you are pretty well out of luck with the 300 EZ. I've been down that road before with the 10D, and I assume the same thing holds true for the 20D.

On EOS-D’s, EZ flashes will work in manual mode but not in TTL mode, i.e. they’ll only work with no automation whatsoever, because of the white balance pre-flash (which cannot be turned off except, precisely, in manual mode). Even EX models will not work in TTL, only in E-TTL and manual modes.

Not only that, but most older non-Canon lenses will not auto-focus on EOS-D cameras, and will even make the camera jam. (Turn camera off and on – try again – give up, dump great older lens – get new lens, make sure it’s EF…).

GREAT! says the Canon marketing department. They'll HAVE to buy brand-new flashes, and lenses, and other stuff...

I hate the Canon Co. ( -- get great FD stuff -- have to dump everything when switching to EOS because of failing eyesight -- get great new EOS stuff -- have to dump 3 lenses and 4 (Canon) flashes when getting 10D -- get new EX flashes, new lenses… ).

Don’ t ask…( Maybe I should title the above rant “ Canon products, and the photographers who love them too muchâ€)…

Mary-Lou,

Your Rebel will no doubt be faster with a faster card.

The question is whether the extra speed is worth the extra investment.

Your best bet is to check Rob Galbraith’s CF database at www.robgalbraith.com (look at the menu on the right side of the page).

Have to go now.

Mary-Lou,

I'm left handed...

I meant for you to look at the left side (the other right...) of the page.

Sorry about that.

Paul
