MP vs M6

The rewind knob on the MP is just fine au naturel...I have an MP and an M6. The discussion that the MP is inferior with regards to the rewind is

responding to the discussion on the MP rewind knob. I'm kind of surprised that no one hasn't come up with an accessory that would work in principle like the little cars we had as kids, where you put the long plastic rod with teeth into the insides of the toy car. when you pulled the plastic rod out it wound up the gears and flywheel inside, propelling it off to play with the dust bunnies. Perhaps a small unit that had a rubber-surfaced socket to fit over the knob would be useful. Kind of like a spring-loaded yo-yo. You would pull on the metal cable that is wrapped around the socket/pulley and in doing so rewind the film in one smooth long stroke. Seems like there ought to be some clever and dependable solutions to solve these Leica dilemnas. hmmm.... : )

Camera Quest rewind crank for the MP

The CQ rewind crank for the MP finally arrived. I installed & used it for the first time while shooting a martial arts event last nite. I went thro' 5 rolls on the MP body alone. For me, having the CQ knob made a big difference in speed. If anything, it was even nicer to use than the canted M4/M6/M7 rewind knob or my old M3 with its Wasserman crank.

In both cases, the MP body has them beat because the MP seems to have increased friction in the spindle, which prevents the knob from rolling back if you let go of the crank/knob for a moment, which happens on the M3 to M6.

I also like the CQ crank better than the Wasserman crank as its handle is a little bit taller & easier to use. Have no experience with Leica's own MP rewind crank, so I can't comment on that item.

iT SEEMS TO ME THAT LEICA HAS FIGURED OUT ANOTHER WAY TO KEEP THEIR SALES UP. THE IDEA HAVE HAVING A CAMERA THAT FUNCTIONS SMOOTHLY AND HAS ALL OF THE ATRIBUTES OF AN OLDER CLASSIC,IT SEEMS THAT THEY ARE
CATERING TO THE -I WANT TO GO CAMPING BUT I DONT WANT TO LEAVE HOME CROWD.
YOU WANT THE FEEL OF A M3? BUY AN M3!
YOU WANT THE VIEW OF A SLR THEN SLR BUY A SLR.
SORRY BUT IM A PURIST.
I HAVE HAD A SO CALLED CLASSIC M6, AND A M42-BRASS, AND NOWI USE A NEW M6...(TTL? WHO CARES).BESIDE THE FUNCTIONAL
USE OF HAVING A METER IN THE M6... THERE WAS NO DIFFERENCE IN EITHER CAMERA'S .
THE M4-2 HAD A SMOOTHER ADVANCE LEVER BECAUSE THE GEARS WERE BRASS LIKE THE NEW MP,BUT IT IS ALSO PRONE TO WEAR BCAUSE BRASS IS SOFT.
I LOVE LEICA GEAR...BUT THE HYPE IS A DRAG
THE M7...APPERTURE PRIORTY? WHY USE LEICA?

jim i had an old brass m4-2 made in canada
with smooth brass gears.
and you can tell the difference in the way it advanced frames.

How do you know your M4-2 has brass gears?

See http://www.nemeng.com/leica/016b.shtml - excerpts below:

What caused controversy was some of the cost savings in the new M4-2's interior workings. The self-timer was deleted; the top-plate was st&ed rather than engraved; the rewind knob spinner economised; the engraved metal exposure counter was replaced with a st&ed plastic version; use of a stiffer, less rubbery vulcanite; steel gears instead of brass; substitution a flat metal disc for the film reminder rather than the mechanical dial used on the M4 and (horrors!) simplification of the rangefinder optics by removing a condenser.

... Then there is the built-in, off-the-shelf motordrive support due to the use of steel gears - the first M Leica to do so.

If your serial number is not among the first few M4-2's built I can't see any chance of it having brass gearing.

Regards,
Jim

[Hi Guys & Gals, I always find these body-feel-gear things interesting as I never had the experince even though I worked with 3 M's at the same time, always of the identical model, I just never had time to even think about the feel. Why? Well I was always so busy shooting my assignments the only thing I had on my mind was capturing the motivating moment.

I some time wonder if this feel thing and knowing about it would've made my pictures any better? ted]
