Leitz 90mm F4 Elmar C

Hi all,

Thanks for all the replies on this. The only "negative" I see so far is--IT IS TOO SHARP!
Seems like a good bet so far. Thanks,

Marc, NYC.

For Vishal Vora, the 90mm/f4 C lens-- made in bayonet mount for the Leica CL model but also usable on Leica M cameras -- takes a Series 5.5 filter, along with the Rokkor 90mm/f4 made for the Minolta CLE model. As has already been mentioned, Series 5.5 filters are difficult to find.

thanks but why is this ruben guy stating that his 90mm C lens is able to take a 39mm filter? is there an adapter availble?

many thanks.

vishal

For Vishal, Leica says its 90mm C lens takes a Series 5.5 filter, which drops into the front of the lens and is held there by the screw-in rubber hood. If you have a 39mm filter, you can check yourself. It won't fit; it's too big. Ask Ruben to explain how he's done it.
The only adapter I can think of would be a step-up ring from Series 5.5 to 39 mm, which might have to be made to order and, therefore, would be uneconomical. The Series 5.5 UV filter would cost from $5 to $30, depending on who's selling it.

Dear Vishal!

Caution: hood & Serie 5.5. filter is want Leica wanted for the special (and wonderful) C_ompact L_eica. Ok. I use both with CL and M7 and found the filters, too.

But if you use 39E filters, you might use them only as a help: It has another angle of the screwing. So without danger (don't sew me!!!) You can screw the 39E ONLY a half or a three quarter turns in - so that it fits "enough" for the picture but could fall down. (I do that for Infrared fotos, where i have only the 39E-type.) If You turn the 39E heavy into the lens it WILL damage the screw, of course. Be cautious, these beauties are ALL 31 or 32 Years old...
B.t.w. if You can rent a lens: compare the C4/90 with the APO 90 on "slow" film. I had many discussions with friends, which picture would be from which lens!

Have fun-
Giselher.

Hi here is another word from Ruben on the 39 mm filter - My elmar -c made in germany takes the same 39 mm filter as my summicron 2.0 ( ihave no idea if it is a 39 abc or e - I am not using force and it srews of again just as easily as it comes on. I am very far from being a leica expert but i do enjoy using the lens. It is nice for portraits and compact to. I have no way of seeing if someone has altered the filtertread but it also accepts a laica rubberhood that i was told was the original ? so dont sew me either

B+W make a variety of Series 5.5 filters I had quite a few for my Summicron C and Elmar C when I owned a Leica CL.
These filters are currently available from B&H photovideo. $22.95 USD for regular and $29.95USD for Multi Resistant Coating (MRC) THese are prices for "new"

Too late for sewing... if it works, it is fine! I have the B&W also, which are great. For hifi-recording i take the filter away.

What i have learned some days ago: There must have been a adapter for the CL-front which connects to the Leica universal POL filter which was built for the outside of the 39E ("Einschraub")-filter mount.

That would be also interesting because as POL on the fine 40 and C90 i use the 39 type like the Infrared one.
i call it in future the "sewing-type" ;-)

Have fun,
Giselher

CL lenses use 39mm thread but .75 pitch. The whole rest of Leica is 39mm .5 pitch. I guess it will start to go on and then jam after 1/2 turn or so. S K Grimes will make an adapter to convert to standard pitch.
