D2H first impressions

Hi everyone!
If some of you out there are not fed up about which gear is next in the market certainly some of us are, and about time to start talking about the art of photography.
While I do not intend to indulge in the "which gear" debate, is it not right that Nikon should develope a back pack for F5 because in my view, no matter how the ongoing debate about digital-film slrs are skewed in favour of digital, a digital at best still remains an alternative, not the real image making equipment. No, I cant be drawn to this argument.

For sometime with a colleague I have been playing around with different digital cameras, MF backs Imacon, Kodak DCS and the like as well as pro D SLRs.

In terms of image file quality we have found (somewhat surprisingly) that the Nikon D2H stacks up very well against any digital SLR, despite its 4MP sensor. The D2H IMHO is a generational advancement in SLR digital technology. Given the exceptional file quality we have pulled from D2H, the Nikon D2 should when released be a killer in the digital world. The pixel form produced from the D2H is excellent with good transfer edges. You can easily blow the files up and print way above A2 size without the image falling apart.

This camera is much more than a sports/photojournalists tool. It will easily handle high quality prepress work. And boy is it fast. The image quality of the D2H compares very well with the Olympus and Fuji S2 cameras. If anything it is better. I can’t believe more of you here on the Nikon site are not singing the praises of this camera. Nikon have been the quite achievers in the D SLR market place producing solid professional digital cameras that actually work. Forget the numbers marketers love to throw at us, its all about the pictures folks.

I have owned my D2h for a month. I shoot weddings with a D100 but want to switch so I can have a camera with professional performance. The quality of the large jpegs from the D 100 are as good as they ever need to be. I have been doing some raw to jpeg conversions in capture 4 from my D2h. I don't know anything about any other pro level cameras, but when I compared the D100
jpeg at 100% to the D2h Conversion at 100% I almost fell off my chair. It is like comparing kodachrome to velvia. The D2h in the right hands is a powerful tool. My point is all of this stuff don't mean anything unless you know what your doing.

Hello Mark

I do use the D2H as well as the D100 - but my favorite is teh D2 anyway - my customers (magazines, newspapers) are happy with the quality of the D2H and there is no need for me to take more pics with the D100. Anyway I already ordered one D2X for High resolution pics - but my D2H will be my favorite anyway.

Kind regards from France (Europe)

Walter

Hi, two questions. 1.) Mark: Which camera is the Kodachrome and which is the Fuji?

2.) Walter: How are you able to order a camera that has not been officially announced? Is it that you just told your dealer the minute it is, order me one? If you are in the mood, just get me one too ;~)

the D2h has a far superior imaging chip than the D 100 so I guess that would make the D 100 the kodachrome. (Not that there is anything wrong with kodachrome) Half of my stock is on kodachrome. Anyway I love my D2h. Also remember we are suppose to be artists and art is subjective. Good luck to all who want better tools.

I remember the day when Kodachrome 25 was the undisputed ch&, that's why I asked :)

@ Boris

I just told my UK-Nikon dealer, whenever it is possible, to preorder/order; he should do so for me ! I am aware of, that there was no official announcement so far.

nice weekend

Walter
