Comparison of Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 and Zeiss Tessar 2.8/45

Hello,

I'd like to jump to Contax system with buying Aria and one of lens from subject. The problem is that I don't know which lens is better from sharpenss and contrast point of view. In lens survey at http://www.cmpsolv.com/photozone/ - Tessar is a bit better.

What's your opinion?

Thanks,

Karel

Hi Karel!

I would prefer the Planar due to its better quality (I have it since nearly 18 years, and I love it). I also had the Tessar, but I sold it due to its only average quality at 5,6 - interesting that in the center stopped down, sharpness is worse than at the edges. A second Tessar of a friend showed nearly the same performance. BTW the price for the Tessar is IMO too high.

Welcome the the Contax-Family, You will love this system.

Regards Wolfgang

Regarding the Aria with either the Planar 50 1.4 or the Tessar 45 2.8, I purchased both with a new Aria, and 95% of the pictures have been done with the Tessar. The sharpness and contrast is amazing with the Tessar. I haven't done any 'real' comparisons, but the point is, the Tessar is great at normal picture size. It may be a different story with enlargments, I am not sure.

Note though that the Tessar is so small that it can be difficult to operate, and perhaps to save even more weight, it doesn't seem to be built as solidly as the Planar.
The Aria + Tessar make for a great lightweight and small package. For a non-pro, it is a great combination that meets my needs.

Gavin.

Hi, Gavin!
Are you still enthousiastic about your Tessar 45/2.8?? I use the Planar 50/1.7 on my Aria and would like to ad the Tessar because of the weight...
Frank.

Yes...the Tessar 45 is still being used on an Aria, with great results, and a good, low weight camera/lens combination.
Gavin.

Tests in the German Foto Magazin show that the tessar 45/2.8 is an excellent lens. Very sharp and crispy results. Except for the wide open shots, where this lens performs good in the corners and is a bit soft in the centre. But the Tessar came out as a clear test winner.
