Xd cards

Hi every one new to digital photography, I have encountered a problem with the xd card. I use the camedia c-740, a 128 MB xd card, and a card reader to up load the images to my PC.After I have uploaded the images to my PC and replace the card in the camera I get a card error message and the card no longer functions. Has any one come across this problem and if so is there a simple solution other than buying another card. I am now on my third card so any help would be greatly received.

> Hopefully, you did not reformat the card with the computer. All reformatting MUST be done with the card in the camera. Reformatting the card by way of the computer will render it useless in the camera. Aside from that, I've had my share of unsolved xD problems.

My mistake. I should have said format first in the camera, if that doesn't work format with another OLY if available. As a last resort use the PC, if it's NG what's lost? As far as formatting in a pc making a card "useless" ????? I just took an old 64meg SD card from my Leica Digilux 2, transferred the photos to a desktop folder, formatted the card in the PC, put the card into a Canon and without formatting the card took a couple pictures. Not useless to me unless your talking about another type mem. Card.

Could it be that formatting to a different file format in the pc might make it not work i.e NTFS instead of FAT?

> I'm talking about CF, xD. I have no experience with SD. With cf and xD, according to everything I've read and heard formatting in a PC should not work as it formats the card for windows, which the camera "may" not recognize. My E-500 instruction book says that cards formatted on a computer will have to be reformatted with the camera because the camera will not recognize it. Problem is, the card may be so unrecognizable that the camera won't allow you to format it. SD are true random access memory cards, cf and xd are not.

Thank you for all your help.Tried reformatting the card in the camera but still get the card error message. I guess I'll just have to buy a new card

When I formatted with the PC, XP OS, it automatically did a FAT format.

My C- 8080 manual says a card formatted in a PC must be formatted in the camera before using. If my memory is correct I suggested a PC format seeing the card only gave errors, then try formatting in the camera, what's to lose? I think you indicated You can't format with the PC. I personally don't think anything is wrong with the cards, or maybe they need to be ejected after transfer or an OS problem, hard to analyze miles away.

Unless those folders are there the camera may not recognize the > card. At 2GB and below CF gets formatted as a FAT-16 device which is a standard DOS thing. At greater than 2GB it gets formatted at FAT-32 which came in with later versions of Windows 95.

As long as the card doesn't get formatted by the computer as NTFS or some other format unrecognizable to the camera (which could include FAT-16 or FAT-32 with unusual but legal parameters) there should be no problem with either the computer or camera reading and writing the disk.

Where you might run into trouble is where the camera doesn't simply format the card but places certain folders and/or data markers on the card as well. If these aren't there it may get confused. It depends on how much thought and effort has been put into the software on each individual camera. >>>> Hope this helps. John

> For what it's worth, computer formatting may add folders the camera won't recognize or remove folders the camera needs. Cards 2G and below are supposed to have fat16, above 2G get fat32. The camera would have simple firmware that knows to do this, the computer does not (necessarily).
