Problems with forward focusing

I have a 1D2N which I generally use in conjunction with a 500/f4 and 1.4X.
The camera was forward focussing and was recalibrated. It still forward focuses despite being returned and the technicians saying it was working perfectly. When you are photographing birds from relatively short distances this becomes a real problem.
I use centre point focus on the eye in One Shot mode. By using f8 to 11 the eye will be in focus but any part of the bird further away quickly goes out of focus while the perch in front of the bird is tack sharp for centimetres.
I've done some crude tests and I suspect it is forward focussing about 15-20mm but the technicians say not.
Any help or suggestions would be very greatly appreciated.

cheers Rob Drummond
