Nikon Interview: Nikon 1 system will not be withdrawn

PhotographyBlog had a quick interview with Nikon Germany and they made clear, that they will continue to offer the Nikon 1 product line also outside of the Nikon DL P&S. The J5 is very successfull...

There is another Interview with the German website "heise" in which among other subjects the Nikon 1 and other Nikon systems are mentioned:

I will translate this for you:

Jasper: Of course Nikon goes on with with this. We are very satisfied with the J5. Depending on the country, we have in Europe a marketshare between 2% and 10%, in Japan we have with the J5 even more than 10% marketshare. We check/watch also other sensor sizes (my interpretation: APS-C and fullframe).

But we do not want to offer our customers just a compromise. With our DSLR line (=DX & FX), we are on the level of Formula 1. Obviously we do not want to be with a new mirrorless camera on the level of GoKart.

So IMHO Nikon does not bring fast a successor of the V3 or a mirrorless system for APS-C sized sensors, if they have the impression that either the sensor image quality or other features like AF speed, battery, viewfinder etc. do not differ enough from other brands offering. Same goes for their own current offerings like the V3/J5 or DX and FX DSLRs.

So Nikon wants to offer new cameras for Nikon 1, DX and FX, if they do something significantly better than what you can buy now from Nikon. That makes sense.

Currently Nikon DX and FX DSLRs are Formula1. Why shall they offer a DX based or FX based mirrorless system, if it is not going to be significantly better than their DX/FX DSLRs?. The Nikon DX/FX mirrorless would be then "GoKart". Same goes for Nikon 1. Why shall they bring out a V4, if it will not be significatly better than the J5?

Of course I would love to have a V4 with a J5 sensor in it. But we have to be aware, that this all costs a lot of money to design and produce. And the Nikon 1 system has not the same sales numbers as the DX or FX system. So they better wait for the right product feature mix (sensor, viewfinder, AF etc.), so that the timing and price is right for a success

Summary is the same as in the other interviews: Nikon will stick to the N1-CX system along with its other DX & FX systems. They monitor closely all innovations for all sensor sizes and of course they are thinking when and how to introduce new products or new technologies. This is valid for all lines: CX, DX and FX. The CX mount will stay as it is. This year they brought 3 new DSLRs to market, which is already a lot for Nikon and in line with other companies.

IMHO, if they would have released additional the 3 DL P&S as planned, than this would have been along with the 3 motion cameras more than what they usually present at a Photokina year...

my own speculation is, that they will first introduce the 3 DL cameras once the technical problems are solved and later a V4 with probably the same sensor and processor as the DLs..
