Need advice re using larger filter than lens

W

I've bought from Leicagoodies.com the step up rings for the polarising filter. (steps up from a combination of 39mm, 46mm, 55mm, 60mm to 46mm to 77mm thread.)

I'm think that it can also be used for the black & white filters (yellow, orange, red and etc) where I ONLY have to purchase 1 set of such filters on 1 size thread if I use the step up attachments.

That will save me a lot of money if I have 39mm, 46mm & 55mm lens.

Is that workable in your opinion? It should be better isn't it as there's no vignetting if filter is larger than lens? Any advice is welcome.
